Nakhon Si Thammarat is a city in the South of Thailand, close to the Golf of Thailand. Originally the city was located right at the coast of the ocean but due to sediments the distance is growing larger. We drove about 30 minutes by car to get from the city center to the coastline.
The city itself – or let’s say the people living in Nakhon Si are great. The friendliest people we have ever met so far. Although only a few locals speak English, they are very helpful and interested in tourists. We haven’t met one single European tourist during our stay there. Perfect! We liked it a lot and we will definitely come back.
Places to visit in Nakhon Si Thammarat are:
Wat Phra Mahathat
This buddhist temple is one of the oldest temples in Thailand. The big Chedi is freshly renovated. Many buddhist come here for praying on public holidays.
Thalad Park
Thalad Park is a very nice asian park that has a very spiritual atmosphere, especially if you there early in the morning. There are ponds, small water courses and many buddhist statues in this park which gives a great setting, combined with lotus blossom and singing birds. The park is next to a zoo which we didn’t visit but our guide told us that they had floodwater years ago which allowed one of the crocodiles to escape from the zoo and swim through the park…
Si Thammasokarat Park
This public park in Nakhon Si Thammarat is located along Ratchadamnoen Road. You can find ruins of the old city wall of Nakhon Si in this park, right next to a small river. In the past, there was a prison built exactly on this place. You can still see parts of the prison walls and the watch towers.
Khao Luang National Park
If you want to visit the Khao Luang National Park and its big waterfall, you should stay in a hotel in Nakhon Si Thammarat. It is not far from the National Park and you can book a transfer direcly at your hotel.
