Koh Talabeng is an adventurous place. The island – or let’s say the big rock inthe middle of the ocean – is located right next to Koh Kam at the east coast of Koh Lanta. The small beach in the crevice and the big caves which can be only properly accessed at low tide, reflect very much the image of a pirate island.
The situation is likely to be pretty much the same as on the other small islands close to Koh Lanta: there are few to no other people anywhere near. Nevertheless it is not deserted, as there are many small monkeys living on the island and they are keeping an eye on every visitor from a save distance in the cliffs.
Inside the big caves you will find strange dripstone formations shimmering in various colours. Some of the caves are interlinked and in case you are not scared to follow an old rope upwards through the dark bat cave, you can even reach the top of the cliffs.
The caves are accessibly by longtail boat or kayak during low tide. There are a few kayaks stored at the beach which are great for exploring the surroundings of the island.
When booking a day trip at one of the local tourist offices on Koh Lanta, you can even include a climbing trip in the cliffs of the neighbour island Koh Phee. Along the route you will see the profile of a gorilla head / big skull at the cliff line. This is another evidence for the pirate island flair of this location.
Koh Talabeng is reachable by longtail boat from Tung Yee Peng pier in the Magrove forest of Koh Lanta. It takes appr. 40 minutes to get there. In case you are planning to climb or to explore the island in detail, you should bring solid shoes. For a general look around the island and the caves no shoes are needed. Or maybe just flip-flops. A trip to Koh Talabeng can be ideally combined with a visit to the islands Koh Kam and Koh Ung.
